Left: Funerary gold mask from shaft grave V in "Grave Circle A" at Mycenae. At its discovery, Heinrich Schliemann claimed to "have gazed upon the face of Agamemnon". Meanwhile it is known to come from the 16th century BC, which is definitely earlier than the death of Agamemnon. Below: Two more gold masks from "Grave Circle A" at Mycenae, where six shaft graves were cut 7.50 m deep into the rock. During Schliemann's excavations 19 skeletons were found there. |
